Frank Scelfo will be the new head coach at Southeastern Louisiana, a source told FootballScoop on Monday.
A Louisiana native and a former offensive coordinator at Tulane when his brother Chris was head coach, Scelfo went on to serve as offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech from 2007-09. Scelfo then spent 2010-15 with the Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars coaching quarterbacks before returning to the college ranks to serve as offensive coordinator for Frank Wilson's UTSA squad the past two season. In November Wilson decided to make a change at the position, recently hiring Al Borges to run the offense.
The 1981 Louisiana-Monroe graduate got his start in the Louisiana high school ranks before hopping the state's western border to coach Texas high school football. He remained in high school ball before joining the Tulane staff as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 1996. He moved to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1999, where he tutored future NFL quarterbacks Shaun King, Patrick Ramsey, J.P. Losman and Lester Ricard.
One would expect Scelfo's staff is expected to have a heavy Louisiana influence at Southeastern. SLU went 6-5 in 2017 under head coach Ron Roberts, who left earlier this month to become the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette. Scelfo's first game as SLU's head coach will be an ironic one; the Lions open the 2018 season at Louisiana-Monroe, Scelfo's alma mater. SLU visits LSU a week after that.
