Utah was one of the first programs in the country to have an offensive coordinator opening, when Andy Ludwig stepped down back in mid-October.
The move opened a coveted Power Four coordinator spot.
In a unique process where both head coach Kyle Whittingham and head-coach-in-waiting and defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley worked collaboratively to chart the future of the Utes program, it sounds like the program is zeroing in on their guy.
Ross Dellenger reports that the Utes are targeting New Mexico offensive coordinator Jason Beck as their new offensive play caller.
A former BYU quarterback who did an impressive job leading an offense that ranked fourth nationally, Beck and the Utes are likely to have a deal done soon, Dellenger adds.
The 44-year old worked with Bronco Mendenhall at both BYU and Virginia, where he coached quarterbacks, before spending a season at Syracuse in the same role in 2022 before being elevated to offensive coordinator in 2023.
The Utes were also rumored to have Texas State's Mack Leftwich on their shortlist of candidates as well, but he opted to stay in The Lone Star State by taking the Texas Tech offensive coordinator job under Joey McGuire.
