Sources: Western Kentucky making switch at key offensive position (tyson summers)

After an eight-win season that tailed off a bit down the stretch, Western Kentucky is seeing changes on both sides of Tyson Helton's coaching staff.

The Hilltoppers lost defensive coordinator Tyson Summers last week to Colorado State, as FootballScoop first reported, and now are making a change at a key offensive assistant spot, sources tell FootballScoop.

Per sources, WKU is moving away from Zak Mizell at the wide receivers coaching position and working to finalize a deal with Jason Barnes, who's been on staff the past two seasons at Charlotte.

Mizell had been on the Hilltoppers staff for the past six seasons, and he was elevated to wide receivers coach prior to the 2024 season.

Barnes, a Charlotte native who starred collegiately at the University of South Carolina, was a long-time assistant at prep powerhouse Dutch Fork followed up by stints at Georgia Military, Bridgewater, Coastal Carolina and Charlotte.
