Sources: Dennis Franchione expected to step down at Texas State (Top)

Dennis Franchione is expected to step down as the head coach at Texas State, sources told FootballScoop Tuesday. Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports also reported the same.

We expect the move won't be made official until later this week.

Franchione went 39-43 in five seasons as the Bobcats' head coach, jumping back into coaching after taking three years off after a five-year run at Texas A&M. He helped shepherd Texas State from FCS to FBS, taking them through a year as an independent, a year in the now-defunct WAC and three in the Sun Belt.

He led Texas State to a 13-11 mark in 2013-14, but the Bobcats did not garner a bowl invite after either season. This season the Bobcats fell to 3-9, concluding with losses in five of their last six outings.

One of the few coaches to forge a high-level career without playing experience, Franchione attended Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at Miller High School in Missouri. He earned his first head job at NAIA Southwestern in Kansas, going 14-4-2 in 1981-82. Franchione returned to his alma mater in 1985, leading Pittsburg State to a 53-6 mark in five seasons.

From there, he was on to Southwest Texas State (later Texas State) for two seasons, then New Mexico for six. He landed the TCU job in 1998 and, after a 25-10 stint in three seasons, parlayed that into the Alabama job in 2001. Franchione posted a 17-8 record in two seasons while under the cloud of NCAA sanctions -- his 2002 team won the SEC West but was ineligible for the SEC title game or a bowl appearance -- and then bolted for Texas A&M in 2003. Franchione went 32-28 in five seasons in College Station.

Overall, Frachione's run ends with 213 victories, 10 conference/division championships and 14 postseason appearances across in eight stops at seven different universities, ranging from NAIA to the SEC and Big 12.

With the move, Texas State will become the 25th FBS school to change head coaches in 2015-16. They are the only opening at this time.
