Report: Art Briles interviewing for FBS offensive coordinator job (Southern Miss)

According to a report from the Sun Herald, former Baylor head coach Art Briles is on Southern Miss campus to interview for their vacant offensive coordinator job.

The position at Southern Miss came open following Shannon Dawson leaving for an offensive assistant job on Dana Holgorsen's staff at Houston.

We hear that Southern Miss has interviewed some other impressive FBS offensive minds for the offensive coordinator opening as well.

Back in August of 2018, Briles signed a 1-year to coach the Guelfi Firenze American football team in Italy, where he planned to coach the 2019 season.

Briles was let go at Baylor back in June of 2016, as the Baylor scandal unfolded, and he hasn't coached since. He's had some opportunities and been connected to a handful of jobs over the years, but public backlash has ultimately led to places cutting ties with him. One of those more public opportunities was in Canada with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where the organization offered Briles the job, and then took it off the table amid the public scrutiny.

This off season has been one of second chances for a few coaches, as both former Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez (Ole Miss) and former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze (Liberty) have landed on their feet with second chance coaching spots.

For what it's worth, last week former Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw (who is now the athletic director at Liberty), shared with CBS Sports that it is his belief that Art Briles will be "largely exonerated" from the wrongdoings at Baylor and available to coach again at the FBS level.
