Notre Dame breaking out green jerseys vs. Florida State (uniforms)

They're on the cusp of a special season in South Bend. The Fighting Irish are 9-0 and ranked No. 3 in the country, three wins away from reaching their first College Football Playoff and five wins away since the program's first national championship since 1988.

Notre Dame will play its final home game of the year Saturday against Florida State, and the Irish will mark the occasion by breaking out their green jerseys.

Though green jerseys are one of the most hallowed traditions for a program composed entirely of hallowed traditions, the Irish are just 6-5 all-time in green and lost their last Green Jersey Game at Notre Dame Stadium in a 38-0 blowout to USC in 2007.

Still, Saturday is the perfect time to break the green back out.

On Nov. 20, 1993 -- nearly 25 years ago to the day -- Florida State came to South Bend for the Game of the Century of the 1993 season. The Seminoles were No. 1, the Irish No. 2. It was a game so big ESPN took College GameDay on campus for the very first time.

"College football was always a big business, but everything about that weekend felt new," Chris Fowler told the San Diego Union-Tribunein 2013. "We'd taken the show on-site for bowls before, but that was the first time we convinced the bosses to do it for a regular-season game. We've done it every weekend of every season since. ...

"I remember how high the grass was cut, how they were still putting fertilizer on it late in the week, to slow Florida State down. I remember we'd put the set up inside the athletic center, in front of the trophy case, because we needed some control over the surroundings. I remember the wild pep rally and how some guys who picked Florida State β€” I won't mention names β€” asked if they could change their picks."

Notre Dame wore blue that day and won the game, 31-24.

The Irish should meet a similar fate on Saturday as heavy favorites over the 4-5 Seminoles. However, Brian Kelly will hope history doesn't repeat itself too much. The 1993 Irish ascended to No. 1 after that Florida State win, but hosted Boston College the following week and lost a 41-39 stunner. Notre Dame finished that season 11-1, while Florida State rose back to No. 1 and claimed its first national championship.
