The Washington Commanders have hired Jesse Madden, grandson of John, as an offensive quality control coach, the team announced Tuesday.
Madden joins the team after spending 2021-23 as a member of the football team at Michigan. A walk-on out of Oakland, Calif., Madden joined the team as a quarterback and appeared in one game in 2021, but switched to defensive back in 2022-23 and did not see game action either season.
Madden was named Michigan's Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and earned numerous academic awards in his time in maize and blue.
"I want to be someone who is known to attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind," he said in a Q&A with Michigan's team website in 2023. "I want to be known as someone who did anything like they did everything, so attack(ing) football just as well as they attack school, just as well as they attack being a good friend, just as well as they attack being a Michigan man. I want to be known as someone who can be trusted and attack each one of the aspects of their life with the same energy and enthusiasm."
It is not clear where Madden spent the 2024 season; he was listed as a redshirt junior in 2023, but was not on the Wolverines' '24 roster.
Either way, he's set to learn the ropes of his grandfather's profession while working under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and head coach Dan Quinn on a team that made a surprising run to the NFC championship game in 2024.
