Jay Harbaugh will not coach special teams on his father's staff in Los Angeles this fall. He's not returning to Michigan, and he's not coaching for Uncle John in Baltimore, either. But he is staying within the family.
Jay Harbaugh is close to becoming the special teams coordinator on Mike Macdonald's new staff with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
Macdonald and Harbaugh worked together twice before. In 2014, Macdonald was a defensive intern for the Baltimore Ravens, and Harbaugh a quality control coach with the offense. In 2021, Harbaugh was Michigan's special teams coordinator while Macdonald ran the defense.
That season, Michigan broke through to defeat Ohio State, win the Big Ten and reach the College Football Playoff for the first time in a long time (or ever, in the CFP's case). Prior winners also selected Harbaugh as the FootballScoop Special Teams Coordinator of the Year that year.
With the move, Seattle has become the unofficial home of Hall of Fame coaching sons: Brennan Carroll, son of Pete, is U-Dub's offensive coordinator, and Steve Belichick is the Huskies' defensive coordinator.
