Movin' On Up
Mike Bobo, Colorado State
Tenure: 20-15, 14-7 MW
This year: 6-3, 4-1 MW
There are going to be a number of SEC openings this year. Seems like there will be a market for a 43-year-old Georgia native with a decade and a half's worth of experience coaching in SEC country and a successful run as an FBS head coach.
Everyone Knows He Can Coach, But Is There a Market?
Rocky Long, San Diego State
Tenure: 61-28, 39-13 MW
This year: 7-2, 3-2 MW
Long is 67. But he's never had a losing season in seven campaigns at San Diego State, and 29-8 with back-to-back Mountain West championships over the past two-plus seasons. If a Power 5 school doesn't pull him away, well, there are worse places to coach out your twilight years than San Diego.
Craig Bohl, Wyoming
Tenure: 19-27, 13-15 MW
This year: 5-3, 3-1 MW
If Bohl, 59, had gotten his North Dakota State dynasty rolling a decade earlier in life, he's probably the head coach at Nebraska right now. Alas, the former Tom Osborne player, GA and assistant will keep winning -- he's 9-3 in MW play over the past two years -- at one of the highest degree-of-difficulty jobs in FBS. Could Nebraska come calling this time?
Keep An Eye On This One
Matt Wells, Utah State
Tenure: 32-30, 21-16 MW
This year: 4-5, 2-3 MW
Wells kept the Gary Andersen train rolling immediately after his departure, going 19-9 with a division championship in 2013-14. (Side note: Andersen has taken and left two Power 5 jobs since leaving Utah State.) But that momentum has stalled. Utah State slipped to 6-7 in 2015, 3-9 last fall and will need to win three of four -- Boise State is one of them -- to avoid missing a second straight bowl game. Could Andersen swoop in and reclaim his former assistant's job?
Bob Davie, New Mexico
Tenure: 30-41, 16-29 MW
This year: 3-5, 1-4 MW
In what seems like half a year ago, last month it was reported New Mexico has retained an outside investigator to examine claims of player mistreatment against Davie. New Mexico recently swept out its AD over ethical concerns. On the field, UNM has lost to New Mexico State, dropped three in a row and wasn't competitive in two of those. Just keep an eye on Albuquerque.
