After a year with Nick Saban and Alabama in 2023 in an analyst role, Charlie Strong is heading back to an on-field role.
Strong is reportedly set to land a job in the NFL.
The 64-year old is set to become the new defensive line coach with the Tampa Bay Bucs, NFL Network shares today.
Strong previously spent a season in the NFL under Urban Meyer with the Jacksonville Jaguars as assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach.
After the Urban-to-the-NFL experiment failed, the former Texas, South Florida and Louisville head coach landed as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for a season at Miami before joining the army of overqualified analysts in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban.
Strong has spent his entire coaching career, outside of two seasons early on working with receivers at Southern Illinois (FCS) and then at Ole Miss a few seasons later, on the defensive side of the ball.
Most of his experience has been working with linebackers, but outside of calling the defense, Strong coached the defensive line at Notre Dame and Florida in the 90s.
After going 37-15 as the head coach at Louisville, Strong took over the Longhorns in 2014, but failed to lead the program to a winning record in three seasons, leaving The Forty Acres with a 16-21 record.
He landed as the head coach at USF for the 2017 season, where he led the Bulls to a 10-2 record and top 25 ranking at the end of the year, but that was followed by dips to 7-6 and then 4-8 before being let go with a 21-16 overall record.
