Birmingham Southern pulls out dramatic walk-off win to keep hopes of a national title alive (Birmingham Southern)

Back on May 20th we shared a story on how Birmingham Southern was just a few games away from bringing home a national title to a school that no longer exists.

Friday, March 31st, marked the final day in the school's rich 168 year history, as it officially closed their doors after struggling financially.

Normally, that would be a death sentence for sports programs, but a GoFundMe fundraising effort brought in over $100k and has allowed the baseball team to chase their dream of being the last team standing at the end of the year.

After getting hot and punching their ticket to the Division III College World Series, Topps announced that they were making an official trading card of the team.

But it continues to get better...

Over the weekend, facing a sad end to one of the best recent stories in sports in an elimination game, with their game against Randolph Macon tied at 7 in the bottom of the ninth inning, BSC knocked a 2-run walk-off home run to keep their hopes for a national title alive.

They now advance in the double-elimination tournament and play the loser of the Salve Regina and Wisconsin-Whitewater game happening on Sunday.

There's no margin for error now as they need to continue the momentum this walk-off homer provided to bring home the national title, where they should rush it home to campus and track down the school president and board who made the decision to shut down the school they just played their hearts out for.

Update >> The day after that dramatic walk-off win, their magical storybook ending came to a crashing halt in the same fashion to UW-Whitewater, who hit a walk-off winner.

In a touching ending, players and alumni walked the field for the final time ever in the school's storied history.
