FIU: No, Pitbull is not in breach of contract with us (Pitbull FIU)

Last week, the website FOIAball took a deep dive into the "unprecedented" arrangement between FIU and Pitbull, in which the international pop star purchased naming rights to the Golden Panthers' football stadium, previously known as FIU Stadium. Although the school announced it as a 10-year deal, the "Give Me Everything" singer agreed to pay $6 million over five years to rename the venue after himself.

But that wasn't all.

Beyond the money, there were promotional aspects to the contract as well. Mr. 305 was supposed to post about FIU to his 80 million social media followers 12 times a year, and he was also supposed to create an FIU-themed anthem to play at Panthers home games. There were other aspects of the deal -- to wear FIU gear in public, feature FIU in music videos -- was left entirely to Pitbull's discretion, and best anyone can tell have not happened. FOIAball combed through Pitbull's various social channels and found a single post solely dedicated to FIU athletics. What's more, there is no FIU Anthem, as evidenced by the fact that none of us are currently bopping our heads to snazzy beat about the exploits of TY Hilton, nor are we waxing poetically about the great 2018 Panthers team that finished a game shy of Conference USA East Division championship and defeated Toledo in the Bahamas Bowl. (For what it's worth, FIU was also not following through on its cross-promotional obligations of Pitbull, and Mr. Worldwide has yet to book the venue for a concert, as is his right.)

Well, the story got aggregated to high holy hell over the weekend, to the point where it evolved into "Pitbull has completely reneged on his sponsorship of FIU," which was never the claim. There's no evidence that Pitbull has not followed through on his contractual payments.

The noise got so loud that, on Monday, FIU put out a statement defending the multi-platinum artist.

"Recent reports are based on incomplete and inaccurate information and do not reflect the full scope or ongoing execution of the agreement," the school said, stating that Pitbull continues to pay on schedule. "Together, FIU Athletics and Pitbull have already generated meaningful visibility and engagement, with additional activations and initiatives currently in development."

The Pitbull/FIU partnership was supposed to be a little bit of business but mostly good vibes between the top Miamian recording artist of the 21st century and the city of Miami's only FBS football team. And now, a year and a half later, the entire ordeal appears to show that both Pitbull and FIU viewed their partnership as a vehicle toward a round of positive publicity in that moment and didn't really care much beyond that. Dale
