An intriguing change has been made in the recruiting industry (College Football Recruiting Rankings)

Since its inception, the 247Sports Composite rankings have been the most trusted of all recruiting rankings. In a note that undoubtedly had them pumping their fists at 247 HQ, the Composite has always been the Rankings of Record here at FootballScoop. The thinking is obvious: individual rankings are always subject to over- and under-performance, but the wisdom of the crowd is always going to get us the closest to accuracy in the inexact science of projecting 17-year-old football players.

On Wednesday, however, 247 announced that while it will still compile composite ratings, its own team rankings will now be based solely on their own in-house rankings. Essentially, this was 247 saying they're better at what they do than Rivals and ESPN, and so there's no need to dilute their own rankings with the competition.

"This update reflects our belief in the strength and consistency of our own evaluation process," the announcement reads. "The 247Sports rankings are built around a specific philosophy that emphasizes long-term projection and alignment with the NFL Draft."

For those who care, 247 ranks exactly 32 5-stars in each class, and awards 5- and 4-stars to only the top 400 prospects nationally, in its estimation. The other services hand out more, and so there were 36 5-stars and 486 4+-stars in the 2026 composite rankings.

Well, over at Rivals, they sensed an insult. Or a market opportunity. Or both. Either way, they pounced.

While 247 prides itself on gearing its evaluations toward the NFL Draft, last year On3 graded each major service's performance in the 2025 NFL Draft first round and -- wouldn't you know it? -- On3* won. The piece opened, "On3’s rankings are judged by the NFL Draft." Their methodology found that On3 produced the closest eventual ranking on 12 of the 32 first-rounders, while 247 won out only three times.

* -- On3 acquired Rivals shortly after the 2025 NFL Draft, and Rivals now produces all the company's recruiting rankings.

Does this mean anything to 99.8 percent of all college football fans? Probably not. But if you're reading this, you're likely in the 0.2 percent of sickos who do care. And for the record, we'll likely switch to the Rivals Industry Rankings here at Scoop HQ.
