Longtime wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales lands at new SEC program (Texas Football)

After getting the contracts of Steve Sarkisian's senior on-field staff settled, Texas on Monday finished its next round of business by announcing new hires and promotions to its off-field staff.

Among those names were former Michigan offensive coordinator Steve Casula, as first reported by FootballScoop, and a previously-unreported hiring of longtime Power 4 wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales.

Gonzales will be an analyst working with the wide receivers, where he'll work alongside fourth-year wide receivers coach Chris Jackson.

Gonzales is among the most well-known assistants in SEC circles. He joined the conference more than 20 years ago as part of Urban Meyer's Florida staff, where he won two national championships with the Gators. Gonzales joined Les Miles's LSU staff in 2010, and helped the Tigers win an SEC championship and reach the BCS national title game in 2011.

Gonzales spent 2012 at Illinois before returning to the conference a year later as Dan Mullen's wide receivers coach at Mississippi State, which in turn brought him back to Florida in 2018. Gonzales spent 2022 at Florida Atlantic after the change from Mullen to Billy Napier but, a year later, was hired by a third Florida head coach when Napier brought Gonzales back to Gainesville again in 2023. Gonzales completed his third, and presumably last, tour of duty as interim head coach following Napier's mid-season firing.

The aim of Jackson, Gonzales and the rest of the Texas offensive staff will be to turn the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of Arch Manning throwing to Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, et. al., into Texas's first SEC championship and the program first national championship in more than 20 years.
