The Atlanta Falcons are firing head coach Raheem Morris and GM Terry Fontenot, per multiple reports on Sunday. The move comes just hours after Atlanta concluded an 8-9 season, their second straight.
The Falcons booked 8-9 records in both of their seasons under Morris; this year, that mark was enough to tie for the NFC South lead but finish third due to tiebreakers. Morris also served as the Falcons' interim for the final two-thirds of the 2020 season, going 4-7.
This was Morris's second, and likely last, stint as an NFL head coach. He went 17-31 as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-11, peaking with a 10-6 squad in 2010 that did not reach the playoffs. Overall, Morris is 36-56 as a head coach.
Morris is among the most respected defensive minds in the modern NFL, rising the ranks as a defensive backs coach, although he has spent a season as wide receivers coach as well. He spent 2015-20 with Atlanta in a variety of roles, from assistant head coach, to offensive pass game coordinator, to defensive coordinator, and ending as interim head coach. Morris spent 2021-23 as the Los Angeles Rams' defensive coordinator, helping the club win a Super Bowl in the 2021 season, before returning to Atlanta as head coach in 2024. He also won a Super Bowl as a defensive quality control for the Bucs' first world champion team in 2002.
At 16-18 in his full-time stint, Morris was more successful than his predecessor Arthur Smith, who went 21-30 over three seasons.
Fontenot had been the club's GM since 2021, his first such role in the NFL. He spent 2003-20 in the Saints' organization, rising from scout to assistant GM and vice president of pro personnel.
