Texas State has surged into the national discussion in recent years under GJ Kinne and should be selected for another postseason appearance on Sunday.
But a season that saw the Bobcats start 3-1, lose five in a row and then earn that potential bowl opportunity with a three-game losing streak to close the year also featured too many defensive lapses.
Opponents taxed Texas State for more than 30 points per game, and as a result, Kinne is moving in a different direction for his defensive play-caller.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Kinne has parted ways with Dexter McCoil Sr. and that Matthew Gregg will serve as the interim defensive coordinator for the expected upcoming bowl game.
McCoil Sr. originally had joined Kinne's staff as the safeties coach and was elevated to defensive coordinator prior to the 2024 season.
He also coached with Kinne at Incarnate Word.
Gregg has now been on staff at Texas State three years, first arriving in December 2022. He's coached in the prep ranks in both Oklahoma, his home state, and Texas in the years preceding his jump into collegiate coaching.
Like many on Kinne's staff, Gregg had an extended run at Incarnate Word before he transitioned to the Football Bowls Subdivision Texas State program.
Texas State finished this season ranked No. 91 in total defense at just less than 400 yards per game and No. 111 in scoring defense at 30.58 points per game. It's the second time in three seasons that the Bobcats have surrendered 30 or more points per game, but they had shown improvement in 2024 when they cut that number below 25 ppg.
But the backslide into the 30s is now leaving the program with change on the defensive side of the ball.
