LSU Staff Tracker (2025-26)

Eight games into the 2025 season, LSU surprised much of the college football world with their decision to move on from Brian Kelly.

In Kelly, LSU had hired someone that had won big at every stop. He won Division II national titles at Grand Valley State (two of them actually), led Central Michigan to a MAC title in 2006, and won back-to-back Big East titles at Cincinnati in 2008 and 2009 before leaving to take over Notre Dame where he led the Irish to double-digit wins six times before shocking the college football world with the move from the midwest to Baton Rouge. 

Despite winning 10 games in his first two seasons, followed by a 9-4 campaign in 2024, LSU pulled the plug on Kelly after a disappointing 5-3 start to the 2025 season that started with national title hopes and a roster full of returning talent.

Kelly's contract called for a monster buyout, and after his official firing date became a point of contention among legal teams from both sides, it became apparent that LSU would owe Kelly the unprecedented buyout figure of $54 million, subject to offset.

In an unprecedented move, the opportunity at LSU (combined with a very unique contract paying him for Ole Miss's future success under Pete Golding) was enough to pry Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss, just as the Rebels were preparing for the College Football Playoff as well as the very real possibility of hosting a game in Oxford.

Kiffin, the former head coach at Tennessee, with the Oakland Raiders, and at USC and FAU as well as time learning under Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator during national title runs, had been the hottest name on the coaching market, pursued for weeks by SEC foe Florida as well this cycle.

The opportunity to Pursue national championships in Baton Rouge ultimately lured Kiffin to LSU.
