Longtime college offensive line coach Tim Drevno has joined the Texas staff as a consultant, Inside Texas has reported. Drevno is listed in the UT directory as a volunteer with the football program and his Twitter bio lists him as a member of the Longhorns football program.
The news came out in the aftermath of an absolutely abysmal performance by the Texas offensive line in their 29-21 loss at Florida on Saturday; however, Inside Texas notes Drevno's Wikipedia page was updated to reflect his new position at Texas back on Sept. 11.
Speaking of that Florida game: Texas surrendered six sacks and seven TFLs, while rushing for 52 yards on 26 credited carries. Arch Manning finished the game as Texas's leading rusher with 37 yards, 36 of which came on one scramble. Quintrevion Wisner led Texas running backs with 11 yards on eight carries. Florida came into the game ranked in the 100s in pressure rate; the Gators came into the game with three sacks on the season, then doubled their entire September output in one afternoon against Texas.
The Longhorns now face an Oklahoma defense that's tied for second nationally in sacks, second in tackles for loss and fifth in rushing defense, allowing them to lead the country in yards per play and rank second in scoring.
So, the situation on the offensive line could not be more dire, and it's not clear exactly how much of the burden Drevno has carried until now, or will carry moving forward. Kyle Flood is in his fifth season as Texas's offensive line coach; he also carries an offensive coordinator title, but head coach Steve Sarkisian calls plays for the Longhorns.
Drevno is best known for his more than a decade as a key assistant under Jim Harbaugh. He was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at San Diego when Harbaugh got the job following the 2003 season, the remained in that position before following Harbaugh to Stanford, the San Francisco 49ers and to Michigan. Within that run, though, Drevno briefly broke away to spend the 2014 season as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at USC, a team coached by Sarkisian. Drevno re-joined Harbaugh at Michigan in 2015 and remained there until 2017; he returned to USC under Clay Helton in 2018 and remained in that role through 2020. Drevno spent 2022-23 as the offensive line coach under Chip Kelly at UCLA, and spent 2024 as a quality control coach under Kelly with Ohio State's national championship team.
