South Alabama has filled an open spot on the defensive side of the ball with an assistant from the MAC.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Eastern Michigan defensive tackles coach Jerone Steckel has joined the staff of Major Applewhite and the Jaguars.
We're told Steckel will coach the team's defensive line.
The new post at South Alabama will mark Steckel's second opportunity at the FBS level following two seasons working on Chris Creighton's staff in Ypsilanti.
He previously coached the defensive line at Southeast Missouri State (FCS) for four seasons and spent one season at Missouri State (FCS) coaching the defensive tackles.
Those roles followed brief stints as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan and Adams State (D-II - CO) and a quality control job at Missouri State (FCS).
During Steckel's time with the Eagles at Eastern Michigan, the program won 11 games over the past two seasons and last year ranked around the middle of the pack, between 6th and 8th, in the MAC in most key defensive metrics last season.
