Circling back to touch on the conversation that we had a few weeks ago about the relevance of the PAT in today's NFL, Roger Goodell told the NFL Network recently that he's actually considering alternatives to the PAT.
"The extra point is almost automatic. I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd attempts. So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play." he Told the NFL Network.
One of Goodel's suggestions that has a lot of people intrigued includes touchdowns being automatically worth seven points. After scoring you'd have the option of attempting an extra play that would give you an eighth point...however (and here's the kicker), if that attempt fails, you go back to six points.
Think about that for a second. It certainly has some value and forces coordinators to think outside the box.
In teacher-speak, that's the equivalent of offering extra credit on a test that you're administering, but if the student attempts it and happens to get it wrong, it counts as incorrect.
