Bruce Arians is expected to retire from his post as the Arizona Cardinals' head coach, he announced Monday. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.
Arians went 49-30-1 in five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, his first full-time head coaching job in the NFL. Arians led the Indianapolis Colts to a 9-3 mark as an interim head coach while Chuck Pagano battled leukemia in 2012.
The Cardinals experienced back-to-back playoff berths in 2014-15, including an NFC West championship and a trip to the NFC Championship in 2015.
Arians has been in coaching since serving as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech from 1975-77, a period in which he also worked as a bartender to supplement his income.

He held a dozen jobs in between Virginia Tech and Arizona, including a stint as Temple's head coach from 1983-87. Arians spent the 1997 season as Alabama's offensive coordinator and then as Peyton Manning's first quarterbacks coach with the Indianapolis Colts from 1998-2000. He won a Super Bowl as the Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receivers coach in 2005, and then again as the Steelers' offensive coordinator in 2008.
That success led him to his one season as the Colts' offensive coordinator and interim head coach, and later to Arizona.
