Before Kevin Smith agreed to join the FAU staff under Lane Kiffin, where he went on to tutor Conference USA Player of the Year Devin Singletary at running back this past season, Smith was arguably the best running back UCF has ever seen.
After earning All-American honors with the Knights in 2007, when he rushed for over 2,500 yards and 29 touchdowns, Smith was drafted in the 3rd round by the Detroit Lions where he played until 2012. By 2015 he entered the coaching ranks as an intern at UCF, before being promoted to quality control administrator in 2016.
Well, according to a video that coach Smith posted on his Twitter, the former running back turned running backs coach, borrowed some practice gear to get a carry in during practice after five years without touching the rock.
What transpired next had Smith narrating his own one-play highlight with "Name a coach that can do this..."
Felt good to get a carry after 5yearsπ¦ Thanks @GregoryCG8 for letting me use your practice gear. #cometothefaU#bowlpracticepic.twitter.com/noJw46jPH2

The carry and cut he makes is pretty smooth, and with Lane Kiffin, Clint Trickett, and Kendal Briles on staff, FAU may be able to make a case for the most athletic staff in the country. With Kiffin, Trickett or Briles spinning it, the other two plugged in at receiver somewhere with Gary Harrell (who played two years in the league), and Garin Justice anchoring the line, the FAU staff could contend for the fictional college football staff flag football national title.
