It hasn't been a good debut for first-year New York Jets head coach Adam Gase. But no matter where it goes from here, it will not cost Gase his job.
Team owner Christopher Johnson told the team and the press on Wednesday that Gase will return for a second season in 2020.
The Jets are 2-7, which includes a loss to the 2-7 Miami Dolphins -- a team that fired Gase a year ago.
The season was partially derailed from the start when quarterback Sam Darnold was diagnosed with mononucleosis, causing him to miss the first three games. However, Gang Green has an opportunity to build momentum before it; after a win over the 2-7 Giants on Sunday, the Jets visit the 1-8 Redskins on Sunday, visit the 0-9 Bengals on Dec. 1, and then host the Dolphins on Dec. 8.
The Jets then close the season with three teams in the AFC playoff hunt in the Ravens, Steelers and Bills.
In three and a half season as a head coach, the 41-year-old Gase is 25-32.
