Josh Kirkland will be the new head coach at New Mexico Highlands, sources told FootballScoop on Thursday.
Kirkland is currently on Eric Morris's staff at Incarnate Word, an FCS school in San Antonio, where he carries the titles of assistant head coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.
New Mexico Highlands is a Division II school located in Las Vegas, N.M. The Cowboys compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
A West Texas A&M graduate, Kirkland began his career in the Texas high school ranks, eventually becoming the head coach at El Paso Parkland -- his first team saw a 4-win increase, reached the playoffs and led the state in rushing -- and Kyle Lehman.
At Incarnate Word, Kirkland helped Cardinal running back Ra'Quanne Dickens set the UIW single-season rushing record while earning First Team All-Southland Conference honors and All-America accolades from multiple selectors. UIW enjoyed a 5-win jump and made the program's first FCS playoffs appearance in his first year on the job.
Kirkland will replace Marty Fine, who stepped down last month to pursue an outside opportunity after three seasons at the helm.
The Cowboys went 2-9 in 2019.
