Georgia State hiring defensive coordinator from rival Sun Belt staff (Travis Pearson)

Troy cornerbacks coach Travis Pearson is expected to become Georgia State's next defensive coordinator, according to a report from ESPN on Monday.

Pearson has plenty of executive experience littered across his 3-decade career, beginning with his award-winning run as a head coach spread across three Alabama high schools in the late 1990s, 2000s, and early 2010s.

After serving as the director of football operations under Gene Chizik at Iowa State from 2007-08, Pearson broke into college coaching for good as South Alabama's linebackers coach in 2013.

He was promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2014-15 campaigns, and later coordinated defenses for Alabama A&M and Alabama State. He has been Troy's cornerbacks coach since 2022.

Pearson replaces Deron Wilson, who was hired last month from Arkansas but left to become the secondary coach at Florida. That vacancy was created when Miami hired Will Harris away from the Gators last week.

Georgia State went 3-9 in 2024, its first under head coach Dell McGee. The Panthers allowed 6.23 yards per play, 111th nationally.
