Jackson State announced Deion Sanders' initial coaching staff on Dec. 7 and his first recruiting class on Dec. 16, but the new Tigers coach continues adding pieces.
On Tuesday, Jackson State formally announced Jason Phillips as the team's co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Phillips was first linked to the staff way back in September, a day after Coach Prime was introduced, but he was employed by Utah State at the time. Three and a half months later, the Aggies' season has come and gone, the program has changed head coaches and Phillips is now free to join Coach Prime's staff.
"I'm excited to join Coach Sanders at Jackson State," Phillips said. "We are changing the landscape not only at Jackson State, but across college football. Our offense is going to be exciting and fun to watch and I encourage everyone to tune in."
Phillips played six seasons in the NFL and coached at Oregon State, Kansas and SMU and also in the Alliance of American Football before joining the Utah State staff.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Jason to Jackson State," Sanders said. "Jason is a great teacher of the game and has an impeccable resume and will help our young men develop on the field of play and in the classroom."
But that's not all. Jackson State is still adding to its historic recruiting class.
The Tigers have added 3-star offensive tackle Javonte Gardner and 4-star wide receiver Trevonte Rucker. Both were originally committed to Florida. Gardner has already signed his letter of intent according to 247Sports while Rucker committed earlier today.
Jackson State's 11-man recruiting class ranks No. 112 in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings, 13 spots higher than the next-closest FCS school (Northern Arizona) and 30 spots above the next-closest HBCU (Morgan State).
Jackson State's per-play rating in the 247Sports composite -- 87.79 -- would put the Tigers near the fringe of the top 25 nationally, and it does not include the 10 transfers that have committed to Sanders' Jackson State program.
