Bill O'Brien's tenure as Ohio State offensive coordinator was a short one.
Boston College is working to hire O'Brien as its next head coach, according to a report Friday from ESPN's Pete Thamel.
O'Brien has long had interest in the position, and was the first candidate mentioned following Jeff Hafley's departure for Green Bay last week.
O'Brien was born in Boston and grew up in Massachusetts before playing college ball at Brown. He returned home as a New England Patriots assistant twice, most recently this past season as offensive coordinator but most famously as an offensive assistant from 2007-11.
That stint landed O'Brien the head coaching job at Penn State, where he went 15-9 in two seasons while working through NCAA sanctions as fallout from the Jerry Sandusky scandal. He then went 52-48 as head coach of the Houston Texans.
The hire temporarily fills every FBS head coaching position, but could create another vacancy. Chip Kelly, Ryan Day's former offensive coordinator at New Hampshire, has been taking NFL offensive coordinator interviews, and has been rumored as a potential replacement for O'Brien in Columbus.
