Pittsburgh Steelers reach Mike Tomlin decision, per report (Mike Tomlin Steelers)

Mike Tomlin will return for a 19th season as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday.

The report comes one day after Pittsburgh fell in a not-as-close-as-the-score 28-14 loss to Baltimore in the AFC wild card round on Saturday. The loss did not come out of nowhere, either; after a 10-3 start, Pittsburgh dropped its final five games of the season.

Tomlin has never suffered a losing season in his 18 seasons leading the Steelers and reached the playoffs a dozen times, but the Steelers have not won the AFC North since 2020, and have not won a playoff game since reaching the AFC Championship at the end of the 2016 season. The Steelers last won the AFC in the 2010 season, and Tomlin's Super Bowl victory came in his second season at the helm.

At the same time, Tomlin has established a baseline competency in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers are famous for their continuity at the head coaching position. The Rooney family has employed three head coaches since Chuck Noll took the job in 1969, and the club has not fired a head coach since Bill Austin in 1968.

Tomlin signed a 3-year extension before this season that keeps him under contract through 2027. He makes a reported $15 million per season.
