Update >> The Hokies have now announced the hire.
The Baylor offenses from just over a decade ago were iconic college football that continue to influence schemes across all levels of football today.
With an offensive coordinator opening in Blacksburg following the departure of Tyler Bowen to become the offensive line coach at Ohio State, Brent Pry is looking to bring one of main coaches responsible for that iconic approach to run the Hokies the offense.
According to ESPN this morning, former Tulsa head coach and Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery has emerged as the target of Pry's offensive coordinator search at VT.
Pete Thamel adds that they two sides are expected to come together on a deal soon.
After a great run as the Baylor offensive coordinator, Montgomery landed the head coaching job at Tulsa, where he spent eight seasons.
He went 43-53 with the Golden Hurricane during that stretch, with a 10-3 finish to the 2016 season as the highlight of his tenure leading the program.
After leaving Tulsa, he landed as the offensive coordinator at Auburn for one season in 2023 and then spent last season in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions working with Skip Holtz, helping lead the team to a 9-1 finish and UFL title.
A noted quarterback developer, Montgomery helped Robert Griffin bring home the Heisman Trophy, and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2013 after helping lead Baylor to the Big 12 title.
Last week, we shared one of the other candidates receiving strong consideration for Hokies play caller job was Bills staffer, and former William & Mary (FCS - VA) offensive coordinator Christian Taylor.
