Ohio State gives Ryan Day massive raise, extension (Ohio State)

It's been quite the two-month run for Ryan Day.

After his Ohio State team faltered in late November against hated rival Michigan, Day guided his Buckeyes on an overpowering run through the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff.

It culminated last month with a CFP title-game triumph against Notre Dame in Atlanta.

Today, Day is seeing the financial rewards.

Ohio State is giving Day a reworked contract that elevates his pay to $12.5 million annually, on average, and also now runs through the 2031 season.

The pact immediately makes Day college football's second-highest paid coach behind Georgia's Kirby Smart, whose annual compensation package is worth $13 million per year.

Day previously was making approximately $10.2-10.3 million annually from OSU, which Day led to its first national title in a decade.

He's now 70-10 in his tenure atop the Buckeyes, with two Rose Bowl wins and victories in both the Cotton and Sugar bowls, as well as the CFP title game.

Day's also remaking his OSU staff after losing defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to rival Penn State last month and, more recently, since star offensive coordinator Chip Kelly -- the former Oregon and UCLA head coach, as well as ex-NFL head coach -- return to the NFL as offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders.
