With their shocking loss to Northern Illinois last weekend, it's safe to say that Marcus Freeman picked up a lot more critics than he did fans.
However, our audience will understand and have a lot of respect for the actions of Marcus Freeman after the loss.
Appearing on a number of outlets to speak after his Huskies pulled off the upset of the young college football season, NIU head coach Thomas Hammock told Pardon My Take recently that he offered to share what he and his staff saw that led to their upset win.
Absolute class move by the head coach in his sixth season leading his alma mater.
Most coaches would allow their ego to intervene, scoff at that idea, and work to turn the page and put the loss in the past.
Marcus Freeman took Hammock up on that offer, and for that, the first-time head coach deserves a ton of credit.
"We've talked on the phone a couple of times, and exchanged text messages. it was my first time meeting him. Obviously I have a lot of respect for him as a head coach and I want him to do well for obvious reasons."
"Just because we competed doesn't mean that we can't help each other, or try to assist each other to make each other better."
"Sometimes, when you become a head coach, you don't have that many people you can really rely upon because no one is going through what you are going through. While I don't understand what he's going through, I have an idea of some of the things he's going through. So if I can help him, and help him achieve the types of things he wants to achieve, that's what it's about, paying it forward."
He then added, "They're never going to play us again, so we will never be a common opponent," before adding that he'd like to see Freeman and the Irish recover and win the national title.
Let's be clear. Both coaches here deserve more than a tip of the cap. Hammock deserves heaping praise for extending the offer as well. Most coaches wouldn't even have that thought cross their mind.
