Brett Greenwood is a motivational speech come to life. He walked on to Iowa's roster in 2011, then worked his way onto the playing field. He played so much and so well, that in 2011 he was in the process of preparing for an NFL tryout when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.
Because of a lack of oxygen to his brain, Greenwood spent 27 days in a medically induced coma. "The initial diagnoses were a life that wasn't life," he said.
But now, four years later and with the help of former Hawkeye Pat Angerer and strength coach Chris Doyle, Greenwood has recovered enough to lead his Hawekeyes onto the field before their game with Pittsburgh last night.
Iowa is 3-0, with a come-from-behind road win over its intrastate rival and beat Pittsburgh 27-24 on a 57-yard field goal last night. But Greenwood provided, by far, the best moment of the Hawkeyes' young season so far.
