Former Houston and Miami quarterback D'Eriq King has joined the SMU staff. The hire was not formally announced, but King is listed as an offensive analyst on the team's website. The news of King's hiring was first reported by Billy Embody of On the Pony Express.
A Manvel, Texas, native, King played at Houston from 2016-19 and at Miami from 2020-21.
As a junior in 2018, King earned Second Team All-AAC honors after throwing for 2,982 yards with 36 touchdowns while rushing for 674 yards and 14 scores.
Upon Dana Holgorsen's hiring in 2019, King played in four games and then took a redshirt. He later transferred to Miami in 2020, where he played for SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee. As The U's full-time starter in 2020, King threw for 2,686 yards, rushed for 538, and accounted for 27 total touchdowns, but suffered a torn ACL in the Hurricanes' bowl game.
A season-ending shoulder injury cut King's super senior season to three games, but in 2021 King became one of the very first athletes to ink NIL deals once the new rules came into effect on July 1 of that year.
King joined the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers in 2022 and spent this spring with the DC Defenders of the XFL. He appeared in seven games with 10 pass attempts and 23 rushes.
Along with Lashlee, King played under co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jonathan Brewer and offensive GA Sam Hullender at Miami.
