Colorado School of Mines is hiring Scott McLaughlin as its defensive coordinator, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.
McLaughlin spent the past 11 seasons in the same role at Wayne State College, a fellow Division II school in Nebraska; he resigned from that post last week.
"Sad to have Coach McLaughlin and his family leave Wayne," said Wayne State head coach Logan Masters. "Coach McLaughlin has been a big part of Wildcat football for the last 19 years and has had a major impact on the young men in our program. I appreciate his loyalty and dedication to making Wayne State football what it is today. We wish him and his family nothing but the best!"
This past season, Wayne State led the Northern Sun Conference in scoring defense (17.7 points per game), total defense (280.6), rushing defense, interceptions, first downs per game, third down conversions, tied for first in forced fumbles, and finished second in sacks. The Wildcats were third in Division II against the run, eighth in interceptions, and top 10 in first downs allowed and on third down.
Under head coach Bob Stitt, who returned for his second stint in February, the Orediggers went 7-4 in 2025 after a 108-62 run over 15 seasons the first time around. While finishing among the top 25 in most offensive categories, Mines was 114th in total defense, 118th in rushing defense, and 81st in scoring at 27.1 points per game allowed.
