After a 3-11 start, Aaron Glenn is making a coordinator change in New York.
Steve Wilks, hired to run the defense in Glenn's first opportunity as a head coach, has been dismissed.
The move comes after the Jets allowed 48 points in a loss to the Jaguars yesterday, with Liam Coen and the Jags scoring on eight of their first nine possessions of the game.
Following the loss, Glenn - who earned the head coaching opportunity in NYC after serving as Dan Campbell's defensive coordinator with the Lions - noted that he brought Wilks in for a reason and maintained that he wanted to run his system.
Those plans changed overnight.
Wilks, a veteran NFL assistant with nearly two decades experience in the league, previously spent a season as the head coach of the Cardinals back in 2018, and has held coordinator titles with the Panthers, Browns, and 49ers and had spent recent time at the college level as the defensive coordinator at Missouri in 2021 and as a volunteer advisor for Biff Poggi's Charlotte staff in 2024.
Nearly his entire coaching career has been spent working with the defensive backfield, but the Jets secondary struggled mightily this season.
Through 15 weeks of the season so far, the Jets were the only team in the NFL without an interception to their credit. The next three worst teams were tied with five a piece.
Dating back to his 2018 stint as the head coach of the Cardinals, where he went 3-13 overall, this marks Wilks seventh straight position he's held for a year or less.
Defensive backs coach / pass game coordinator Chris Hall is stepping in as interim defensive coordinator for the final three weeks of the season, and Glenn noted that he will be assisting Harris in that new role.
