Following two seasons coaching Michigan State's running backs and serving as the assistant head coach for the Spartans, Keith Bonapha will not be a part of Pat Fitzgerald's program moving forward, FootballScoop has confirmed.
Additionally, Bonapha had been Michigan State's co-special teams coordinator and the play-caller in that phase of play.
A veteran coach with more than 20 years' experience, Bonapha had followed head coach Jonathan Smith from Oregon State after the two worked together on the Beavers' staff in 2023.
Bonapha, a former University of Hawaii defensive back who launched his coaching career at his alma mater, like many of Smith's coaches in East Lansing, Michigan, had almost exclusive coached only the West Coast and in the western United States.
Bonapha's coaching stints include two stops totaling nine years at Boise State and eight years at Washington under esteemed former coach Chris Petersen and then the most recent three seasons with Smith.
Smith was fired last month after Michigan State posted back-to-back losing seasons under Smith that included this year's 4-8 campaign.
The Spartans moved quickly to hire former Northwestern record-setting head coach Pat Fitzgerald. He has been systematically getting together his inaugural Spartans staff.
