Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham is a lot of things.
One of college football's youngest leaders? Of course. Offensive mastermind? Yes. A leader who wears his heart on his sleeve? Sure.
Cookie cutter? Absolutely not.
So with the Sun Devils heading into a bye week after an emotion win over Matt Campbell and Iowa State, Dillingham isn't just rewarding his crew with a few days off.
In an unprecedented move among football coaches always looking for ways to get good work in, Dillingham is actually giving his guys the entire bye week off.
“This has been an emotional season and I’m about to give these guys literally the entire week off,” Dillingham said.
"This has been an emotional season physically, mentally. These guys need to get away and come back ready for a three-game stretch where we can accomplish anything we want to accomplish."
With the win over the Cyclones, with starting quarterback Sam Leavitt out for the rest of the year with an injury, the Sun Devils remain in the hunt for the Big 12 title with two conference losses after former Georgia Tech starting quarterback Jeff Sims stepped in an accounted for 405 yards of total offense in the victory.
The Sun Devils get West Virginia at home coming off their bye week, followed by a trip to take on Coach Prime and a reeling Colorado squad who have been beaten to a pulp the last two weekends, and then end the year with their traditional rivalry game with Arizona in Tempe.
"I want these guys to get away," Dillingham shared. "I want to get these guys away, the coaches away, and then come back to this thing rested - mentally and physically - we are going to have a physical practice on Monday when they return, so we can get into a normal Tuesday week. That way, when we practice, we can be physical, we can be violent, we can be intentful. But yeah, we're going to take the entire week off."
