Texas Tech moving to new, old logo beginning in 2026 (Texas Tech Football)

Texas Tech athletics is so hot right now, to quote Will Ferrell's fashion expert Mugatu from the classic film Zoolander, and so naturally the Red Raiders are making a fashion change.

Tech announced Tuesday that, beginning with the 2026-27 athletic year, the Red Raiders will move to a "modernized" Double T logo, along with introducing/formally adopting several secondary logos. The "modernized" Double T is really just reverting to the old, un-beveled Double T the program wore way back in the 20th century.

According to the Helmet Project, Texas Tech originally introduced the Double T logo in the early 1960s and wore it through 1999. Tech introduced the modernized, beveled Double T in 2000.

"The Double T represents one of the most recognizable logos in all of collegiate athletics and a point of pride for all Red Raiders," said AD Kirby Hocutt. "As we celebrate Homecoming this weekend and welcome back thousands of alumni to campus, this is the perfect opportunity to unveil our new branding that will resonate with our history and define Texas Tech Athletics for future generations of Red Raiders. This multi-year project will propel our athletics brand further into this new era of college athletics where Texas Tech will continue to lead at a national level."

The announcement comes as Tech prepares to host Kansas for its homecoming game, and will do so while wearing throwback uniforms.

Tech is in the midst of its best football season ever through five games; not only are Joey McGuire's Red Raiders 5-0 and ranked No. 9 in the AP poll, they've won all five games by at least 20 points, with a defense that ranks fourth nationally in scoring and first in stop rate.

Moreover, the Red Raiders softball team finished one game shy of a College World Series championship and will be the overwhelming favorite to win their first national title this spring, and the men's basketball program has reached the Sweet 16 four times in the past eight years, with an Elite Eight loss to eventual national champion Florida last March.

Interestingly, Texas Tech athletics will move to the new throwback logo, while Texas Tech University will continue using the beveled logo. New football uniforms will drop at some point in 2026 and we'll have plenty of coverage here when they do.
