The Tennessee football program is the latest to invest in a sleep monitoring component in an effort to help maximize a player's potential.
To start the season off, a handful of Tennessee players will have high-tech sensors added to their beds to monitor their sleep. Each player will also be assigned a "sleep coach" for the duration of the season.
"It's important, because making sure that they're recovered is nutrition, it is the cold tub, it is stretching...but it is also sleep." Allison Maurer, the team's Sports Nutritionist explained.
"The sensor goes on their mattress and it measures heart rate, respiration, and movement. Through that sensor, they're able to see how long it takes players to fall asleep with that resting heart rater and whether it's high and they're not recovering as well.
"It's all about investing in our players, and really investing in them for them to reach their full potential." Butch Jones explains at the end of the clip. "That's all part of our sports science, and having sleep coaches and sleep monitors, and making sure that they get the nine hours rest that they need."
