Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith and Oregon State have agreed to a deal to make him the next head coach of the Beavers.

The details behind this search were really interesting, with a number of names swirling around, including former head coach Dennis Erickson as recent as yesterday
This marks a homecoming for Smith, who played quarterback for the Beavers. After initially walking on, he went on to set Oregon State records for passing yards, total offense and touchdown. After Smith graduated, he went on to serve as a graduate assistant in 2002 and 2003 under Dennis Erickson, and then Mike Riley.

Calling the offense and coaching quarterback Jake Browning last year was special, with the smashing a number of Huskie records, including total touchdown (77) and points (585), both significantly higher than the previous records of 64 touchdowns and 493 points. In 2001 he led the program to an 11-1 mark and berth in the Fiesta Bowl, where he was named MVP. That year the Beavers finished #4 in the final AP Poll.
Before joining Chris Petersen's staff at UW, Smith worked with him at Boise State, where he coached the quarterbacks. Prior to that he had stops as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Montana, as well as coaching the quarterbacks at Idaho.
