One of the best under the radar stories in all of sports took place in the woodlands of the Midwest at Northern Michigan in the mid-1970's.
In 1974, Northern Michigan University ended the season with a dismal 0-10 record. The very next year, following a coaching change, NMU completed one of the most impressive turnarounds in all of sports, ending the season as national champions with a 13-1 record.
Led by former NFL head coach turned analyst Steve Mariucci at quarterback, the Wildcats began their playoff run by beating Boise State (then a Division II member) 24-21, then later had to score 28 second quarter points to beat Livingstone College in the semifinals before beating Western Kentucky (also a Division II member at the time) in a 16-14 nail-biter.
In kind of a cool twist, one of the assistant coaches on that team was Carl "Buck" Nystrom, and this past off season, his son (Kyle Nystrom) was tabbed with taking over the program and returning it to its glory days.
To commemorate the biggest turnaround in college football history, and perhaps in all of sports, Mariucci and some other members of that 1975 team are trying to band together to create a documentary about the season.

Hopefully, Mariucci is able to put together enough support to get the ball rolling on this because it's a great story of hope, hard word, and perseverance that really needs to be shared with as many people as possible.
