"There are times we won't recruit a kid just because they don't play multiple sports."

There is no shortage of research, or testaments from college coaches out there about how playing multiple sports growing up can lead to a remarkable development both physically and mentally.

During his weekly radio appearance on KFAN 100.3 Sports Radio, PJ Fleck was talking about multi-sport athletes and shared the following specific to how he and his staff at Minnesota recruit and their philosophy on building a roster.

"90% of the people that we recruit, we want to play multiple sports," Fleck notes.

"There are times where we won't recruit a kid, just because he doesn't play another sport. We want multi-sport athletes. I'm not saying we won't, a lot of quarterbacks specialize these days, I get that, but again, I want athletes that play multiple positions."

Fleck also noted that recruiting multi-sport athletes does have its hurdles though.

"The only thing that hurts, is sometimes, when guys start early - you know we want kids to enroll a lot faster now, getting started in Janauary - so you take away that basketball and track, so the decisions to do that is being made earlier, based on wanting to enroll early."

Whether you agree with it or not, that's how Fleck and his staff are going to build the Minnesota roster moving forward. Only time will tell if it's a successful recruiting strategy.
