Sources tell FootballScoop that former UMass head coach Mark Whipple is expected to become the new offensive coordinator for Pat Narduzzi at Pitt.
Whipple, who has strong recruiting ties to the area and Pittsburgh in general, just wrapped up a five-year run during his second stint as the head coach at UMass. In those five seasons, Whipple went 3-9, 3-9, 2-10, and then had back-to-back 4-8 seasons before stepping down. In his two stops at UMass, Whipple was a combined 65-50 and has a career record as a head coach of 137-103.
During his first stint as the UMass head coach, Whipple led the program to a 12-win season in his first year (1998) and a 10-win season in 2003 before leaving to become the quarterbacks coach for the Steelers.
Whipple has also served as the offensive coordinator or head coach at New Hampshire, New Haven, Brown, and Miami (FL) in addition to his stops at UMass.
For Pat Narduzzi and Pitt, this will mark the fourth offensive coordinator for the program since he took over in 2015. His first season, the offense was led by Jim Chaney, then it was Matt Canada, followed by Shawn Watson - who Narduzzi let got a few weeks ago. Both Chaney (Georgia) and Canada) (LSU) left for other coordinator opportunties.
