Report: San Francisco 49ers expected to make "sweeping changes" that include dismissing Chip Kelly (San Francisco)

Sunday night update>> Following their game today, the organzation has now formally announced that Chip Kelly will not return next season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported this evening that the 49ers are planning on making "sweeping" changes that include parting ways with head coach Chip Kelly after one season.

Schefter points out that that GM Trent Balke will also be on the way out.

If the Niners do in fact decide to move on from Kelly, it would mark the second straight head coach that they've given a super short one-year leash to get things turned around. Kelly is 2-13 heading into the final weekend of the regular season. Before Kelly was brought in, Jim Tomsula was promoted from assistant to head coach to take over for outgoing Jim Harbaugh, and Tomsula lasted just one year as well, going 5-11 before being dismissed.

Of course, Kelly, who has maintained his desire to remain at the NFL level, previously served as the head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and at the college level at Oregon. Oregon decided to dismiss Mark Helfrich a few weeks ago, and moved rather quickly to name South Florida's Willie Taggart as their new head coach.

As the leader of the Oregon program for four seasons, Kelly was instrumental in the creation of the Oregon brand of fast-paced offense that they've become nationally known for. In Eugene, Kelly went an impressive 46-7, including a 33-3 mark in Pac-12 play with an appearance in the National Title game in 2010 and two Rose Bowl appearances.

Stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest as more develops on this situation and the next few days will bring plenty of more changes at the NFL level.
