"Guys, dudes, and animals" - The three types of players on Don Brown's defense at Michigan (Featured)

There's a lot that Don Brown does on the defensive side of the ball that fascinates many coaches.

In passing the other day, Don Brown shared something a nugget of info about the three types of players on Michigan's defense. It's something beyond the X's and O's that just as valuable and provides some insight into how they view their personnel in Ann Arbor.

With the Wolverines defense, there are three types of players, according to Brown.

"You know, you're a "guy," and that's your first start. Then, once you're really playing well, you give them "dude" status. Then we give them the competing "animal status." So there are your three levels."

"Being a dude is not easy to do now. That's held in pretty high esteem."

In all fairness, before leaving for Ann Arbor, Don Brown ran the nation's top defense at Boston College, and it was there that having "dudes" and "being a dude" seemed to first go viral. But coaches everywhere (myself included) can't help but adopt the "dudes" phrase when referring to guys that can flat out play. Similarly, maybe "animals" will catch on now too.

If you don't fit into any of those three, I'm guessing you don't step foot on the field for Brown's unit.

Brown's group of guys, dudes, and animals status' will be on full display tomorrow at noon when Michigan takes on Ohio State at the Big House.

Hear Brown's explanation below.
