Joey McGuire shares why you won't hear his name in the mix for other openings (Featured)

Texas Tech's rise into a College Football Playoff contender under Joey McGuire is something we've marveled at a number of times over the years.

McGuire seems to be the perfect fit at the West Texas school, but even the most perfect of fits have end up hearing their name mentioned for other openings in college football after successful seasons.

After securing a huge investment in their roster heading into the 2025 season, and managing to keep guys like GM James Blanchard in Lubbock after Notre Dame came after him hard, the expectations at Texas Tech for McGuire and company were perhaps the highest the school had ever seen.

McGuire would go on to lead the Red Raiders to their first Big 12 title with a dominant 34-7 win over BYU in the December championship game before punching their ticket to the College Football Playoff where they enjoyed a first-round bye as one of the top seeds, but they would end up getting blanked by Oregon in the quarterfinal game 23-0.

Ending the season 12-2, you would have thought McGuire's name would get mentioned for other jobs in college football, but his name stayed out of the mix.

As he shared on the Jim Rome show yesterday, that was by design because he firmly believes he has the best job in the country.

"One of my good friends, Bob Stoops - his book is one of my favorites and I read it a few times a year - and in it he always talks about why he never left OU, and it's like 'Where is there a better job?' That's why you never heard my name...my guys know, my guys that represent me know do not put my name out there. That's how most coaches get their names out there, it's their agents putting it out there."

"I told my guys, 'My name should never be mentioned in any job,' because I have the best job in the country. My president, his son is the special teams coordinator at Florida Atlantic. Our chairman of the board is Cody Campbell and his name is on the football field."

McGuire goes on to name a few more individuals who have spots on campus named after them and are in high-ranking spots in the Texas Tech community before adding there is no other university aligned like the one he's a part of in Lubbock.

"Plus I work for the best AD in the country. He played linebacker at K-State so he's played at this level and understands what it takes to win."
