The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards, presented by ProGrass, are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. Finalists were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors and other athletic department personnel. The winner will be chosen by the previous winners of this award and will be announced the week of December 8th.
The 2014 FootballScoop Coaches of the Year will be recognized and will receive their awards at an event held in their honor at the American Football Coaches Association's annual convention in January in Louisville, KY.
Previous winners of the Quarterbacks Coach of the Year award are Josh Heupel (Oklahoma, 2008), Tom Rossley (Texas A&M, 2009), Philip Montgomery (Baylor, 2011), Mark Helfrich (Oregon, 2010 and 2012) and Randy Sanders (Florida State, 2013).

Dave Baldwin, Colorado State
In 2013, Garrett Grayson was just another quarterback. The junior ranked 48th in passing efficiency with nearly 3,700 passing yards for 23 touchdowns against 11 interceptions on an 8-6 team. A year later, Grayson is the most efficient quarterback in college football outside of Eugene, Oregon. Ranking seventh in passing at a shade over 310 yards per game, Grayson places second nationally in passing efficiency, hitting 66.8 percent of his throws for a full 10 yards per attempt with 29 touchdowns against only five interceptions. Grayson has been a key reason Colorado State is 10-1 with hopes of winning a Mountain West championship.
Key Stats
- 1st in completions of 30-plus yards (29)
- 2nd in passing efficiency (176.3)
- t-1st in yards per attempt (10.0)
- 7th in passing offense (310.3 yards per game)

Sonny Cumbie, TCU
The best thing one can say about Sonny Cumbie's work with Trevone Boykin is that he does not play like the Trevone Boykin anyone knew heading into this season. Boykin completed 107-of-176 passes for 1,198 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions a year ago, which would have ranked 88th nationally had he hoisted enough passes to qualify. In 2014, Boykin has triggered a 9-1 TCU team as it hunts for a Big 12 and national title, ranking 30th in passing efficiency and third in total offense. Boykin has nearly doubled his touchdown percentage (3.97 to 6.22) while chopping his interception percentage into fractions (3.97 to 1.3).
Key Stats
- 3rd in total offense (356.9 yards per game)
- 8th in passing offense (302.1 yards per game)
- t-16th in touchdown passes (24)
- t-8th in pass plays of 40+ yards (12)

Kevin McGiven, Utah State
Utah State's season story at the quarterback position can best be told in one sentence: They're down to their fourth string quarterback, true freshman Kent Myers (who had to burn his redshirt), and he's lighting it up (73% completions percentage). Myers has led the team to four straight wins while tossing 5 touchdowns and just one pick, and has rushed for another three. Back in early October, the Aggies learned that they lost starter Chuckie Keeton for the season, and have cycled through three more quarterbacks with a undeniable amount of success and efficiency.
Key Stats
- 9-3 record with 4 different starting quarterbacks
- Freshman quarterback Kent Myers is completing 73% of his passes
- Backup quarterback Darrell Garretson completed 67% of attempts
- 4-0 record for freshman quarterback Kent Myers
- Myers has accounted for 8 touchdowns (5 passing, 3 rushing) and thrown just 1 pick

Tom Herman, Ohio State
On August 18, Braxton Miller didn't think he was going to start for Ohio State this season. Three months later, he's a Heisman Trophy candidate. The redshirt freshman has posted arguably the best season in school history, surpassing even the 2006 Heisman campaign of Troy Smith, with 42 total touchdowns and 3,507 yards of total offense - school records on both counts, and with three games to spare. Barrett is the nation's third-rated passer at 9.1 yards per attempt with 33 touchdowns against 10 interceptions and has also rushed 156 times for 849 yards and nine touchdowns. Most importantly, Barrett has carried a 10-1 Ohio State team on its back to a second straight Big Ten title game and a possible College Football Playoff berth.
Key Stats
- 12th in total offense (318.8 yards per game)
- 42 total touchdowns (school record)
- 3rd in passing efficiency (171.39)
- t-4th in yards per attempt (9.1)
- 2nd in touchdown passes (33)
