Florida State's Two-Match Coverage with Invert Principles: Cover 5 (man under, two deep) is a solid 3rd Down non-pressure coverage for good reason: It shores up underneath routes and protects against vertical pipes. But it’s still susceptible to mismatch issues and can be an easy identifier for a smart QB. The last two seasons Florida State has integrated more split field coverage concepts into a two-man umbrella pitting corners as over-the-top defenders while safeties match routes underneath. And according to defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, the invert concept gives a different picture for the quarterback, becoming another way to play split safety defense and have the same run-fit structure as quarters. This was the Seminole’s go-to coverage on third down the last two seasons. They ended the 2023 season 2nd in team passing efficiency defense, 4th in third-down defense and 6th in scoring defense nationally. Read the full report here.
