Montana State defensive coordinator Kane Ioane is leaving to become a co-defensive coordinator at Boise State, sources told FootballScoop on Friday. Ioane is expected to coach the safeties.
The news comes on the heels of head coach Jeff Choate leaving Montana State to coach linebackers at Texas.
Ioane was an All-Big Sky safety for the Bobcats and left school in 2003 as the program's all-time leading tackler. He began coaching for Montana State in 2005 and rose to defensive coordinator in 2015.
Ioane left for Washington in 2017, working as a defensive analyst. After two years there, he returned to Bozeman as defensive coordinator in 2019. His one season saw Montana State finish 23rd in FCS in scoring defense (up from 65th the year prior) and reach the FCS semifinals.
Once completed, Ioane will become the 10th member of Andy Avalos's defensive staff. He'll join a group that includes defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach Spencer Danielson, outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Stacy Collins, assistant head coach/defensive line coach Frank Maile, and cornerbacks coach Jeron Johnson.
