Miami has fired defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, head coach Mario Cristobal announced Tuesday.
“In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense," Cristobal said in a statement.
At least one other change is expected on Miami's defensive staff, sources tell FootballScoop.
The move comes after Miami closed a 10-3 season where a best-in-the-nation passing offense was often undone by an inconsistent defense. The Hurricanes finished 68th nationally in scoring defense, surrendering 25.3 points per game.
Worse, Miami closed the year with a 42-38 loss at Syracuse in which a victory would have sent The U to the ACC Championship and, in all likelihood, the College Football Playoff, and then with a 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop Tarts Bowl on Saturday.
Guidry joined the Hurricanes after his 2022 Marshall defense allowed just 16 points per game, but the defense never clicked in two years on South Beach. Miami allowed 22.8 points in 2023, then backslid in '24.
